Dynamic text elements can easily be added to any Unbounce page template with a few simple steps. If you've purchased a landing page template that already has dynamic text set up then you can get everything working within minutes.
How do dynamic text elements work?
Dynamic text elements are coded to look for a specific string of text within your landing page URL.
For example, a landing page may be set up to change the headline text to match the keywords you're using in Google Ads to advertise for a specific service. The URL may then be set up to include a UTM-type parameter such as www.sampleurl.com/?&service=bed+bug where any dynamic text element on the page that is set up to look for "service=" would then be replaced with "Bed Bug" on the landing page.
How do you set up dynamic text elements within Unbounce?
To get started you'll first want to identify which text you want to be dynamic and, most importantly, what the default or "fallback" text will be.
A pest control company may build a landing page with the headline "Pest Control & Inspection Services" and can easily use "Pest" as the dynamic text element and the fallback. Making this element dynamic only take a few steps.
Highlight the text you want to be dynamic Only select the word or words that you want to dynamically change and not the entire headline, for example.
Select the "Action" tab located in the Properties panel on the right of the page editor
Click the "Dynamic Text" button under the Dynamic Text Replacement dropdown
Choose a one-word URL parameter This is what the dynamic element will be looking for in your URL. In the example above we would enter "service" in this box.
Leave the Default Text box as-is as this is what will display on the page if the URL parameter is not found.
Select your text style to match the headline or sentence and ensure consistency with other similar elements. For most headlines we choose title case.
Click the "Save Dynamic Text" button and then save and republish your page when ready.
How do you make dynamic text elements change on your Unbounce landing page?
Once your dynamic text elements are set up then you can very easily make these elements change by editing your landing page URL. To illustrate this concept we will use our landing page template: https://demo.unbouncetemplate.com/exterminator/
This page, by default will show "Pest" as the placeholder for most of the dynamic text elements. The headline, for example, uses this as a placeholder for the dynamic elements.
To change this element we will add ?&service=bed+bug to change all instances of the service element to "Bed Bug". The URL will then be https://demo.unbouncetemplate.com/exterminator/?&service=bed+bug. You can play around with this element by using different text to see how it changes the text on the page.
The "?" in the URL tells the browser that the URL is ending and that anything after this is a URL parameter. All dynamic parameters will be separated by and start with the "&".
A URL with multiple dynamic text references would look something like, www.sampleurl.com/?&service=bed+bug&state=texas.
